The Army Painter - Gamemaster Dungeons & Caverns Core Set Review

  • Foster

We were recently given the opportunity to review the Dungeons & Caverns core set from Army Painter and whilst we're not D&D players here at 360 Wargaming the set should be a must regardless of the table top games you play.

This set contains everything you need to get started building a dungeon or cavern for your adventurers to battle their way through. The contents can be found on the Army Painter website but here it is for quick reference -

  • 7 x 18ml Paints
  • 50ml Dungeon Base Paint
  • 50ml Cavern Base Paint
  • 1 x Large Drybrush
  • 1 x Medium Drybrush
  • 1 x Wash Brush
  • Hot Wire Foam Cutter
  • 75ml XPS Foam Sculpting Glue
  • 150ml Scenery Sand
  • 300ml Dungeon & Subterrain Primer
  • 77 x Dungeon Tufts
  • Scenery Knife
  • 1 x Mixing Palette
  • 11cm x 28cm Sheet of Sandpaper
  • 30cm Steel Ruler
  • 6 pcs XPS Foam Board (200x300x11mm)
  • 2 pcs XPS Foam Board (400x300x11mm)

On top of all the things that are in this set Army Painter have taken the time to create easy to use colour schemes, giving you 3 paints for caverns and 3 dungeons it really couldn't be to get started. If that wasn't enough they even give you the brushes you need for each step.

The Army Painter even went so far as to create spray primer and glue specifically for use with foam, so

no more melting your foam building while you're trying to prime it.

We all know your dungeon wouldn't be complete with out a few little accessories and clearly the designers at The Army Painter felt the same way. Adding a few to the set though we're sure you all have some of your own.

If you're stuck for ideas, don't worry the 'How to Build - Dungeons & Caverns' book as you covered. With instructions on how to texture, cut and paint the foam that's included in the set. There's also some some advanced techniques to take your build that extra step.

By our calculations you get around 30% extra by buying the bundle as opposed to buying separate, making this really good value for your money. So if you're in the market to build a new dungeon or even if you just want to use it to build ruined buildings we've no doubt you'd benefit from this set.

The Army Painted do loads of other products to meet your hobby needs to stop by their website or Facebook page for more information.
